MY FRIEND TOLD ME THAT YOUR CABLES ARE DIRECTION SENSITIVE! THERE IS SO MANY VOODOO IN AUDIO MARKET, I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT YOUR IMAGE IS RATHER RATIONAL THAN PARANORMAL! Date: April 17, 1999 05:33 AM Author: julian vereker Subject: direction Here follows a cut & paste from an earlier post of mine. "I can't tell you why cables sound different one way round to the other, but I do know when the 'directionality' happens in manufacture. It doesn't seem to matter how the bundle (of copper) is drawn, single direction or mixed direction, but as soon as the insulation is extruded onto the bundle, the directionality is established. This means that one can mark the insulation and it will always be the right way round. I suspect that the hot plastic insulation anneals the copper in some way, and this affects the crystaline structure. But all our attempts, over many years, have failed to find any measurement to show the directionality or indeed whether one cable will sound better than another (other than the obvious - resistance, capacitance and inductance) Maybe someone out there knows?" I am not sure about being an ex Physicist, I would have thought 'Once a Physicist always a Physicist'. However one thing that is often missed by the 'profesionals' is that audio electronics design is the most difficult discipline of all - one has to design for 10 octaves and 130dB at the same time - a huge envelope, and much larger than any other area of electronics endeavor. julian Date: April 08, 1998 02:02 AM Author: julian vereker Subject: cables [...] All Naim cables are directional, we don't know what the mechanism is, but they are all marked which way to connect them. julian IT IS SAID THAT YOU RECOMMEND USING INTERCONECTS MANUFACTURED BY CHORD. Date: January 07, 1999 05:23 PM Author: julian vereker Subject: recommendations Robert wrote "Periodically I switch back to Naim recommended Chord Cobra II, and while everything calms down, . . . , To set the record straight, Naim (the manufacturer) does not recommend other manufacturer's interconnects - Chord or anybody else. . . One of the reasons for this is that although a cable from a particular batch maybe suitable, mostly the variations in other's products do not make them recommendable. Its one of the most variable supplies we have and one of the most difficult to maintain consistancy. julian IN THE MANUAL YOU ADVICE USING YOUR OWN LOUDSPEAKER CABLE, THERE IS ALSO STRONG ADVICE AGAINST USING BIWIRING. WHY? Date: 7-Mar-99 10:39 Author: julian vereker Subject: bi-wire [...] It is part of the amplifier output circuit which expects a certain inductance and a very low capacitance (see below), if you bi-wire (even with NACA5) you double the capacitance that the amp 'sees' and this can cause a problem. [...] If you Naim amp is destroyed by using unsuitable cables, it is a clear failure mode and is not normally covered by warranty. julian FORCING ME TO BUY YOUR CABLE IS NOT FAIR! I WANT TO MAKE CABLE MYSELF OR USE ANOTHER ONE. PLEASE GIVE ME A SPECIFICATION. Date: 26-Aug-98 02:07 Author: julian vereker Subject: Cables Again Please can I draw your attention to the following notes: ****Ed's Note: Many cables will 'work' in particular systems, but if the specs are very different from NACA5, then problems may occur with certain speakers**** FOR INFO THE RELEVANT SPECS ARE: 1.3 - 1.5microHenries per metre (Loop) MAX 20picoFarads per metre About 25milliOhms per meter (loop) MIN Length 3 metres **ED** and: refering to Litz type high capacitance cables. *****ED's Note: Do not use these types of cables with Naim power amps if you wish to have Naim's warranty - please see your owners manual***** WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT LINN K20 CABLE? Date: September 10, 1999 05:14 AM Author: julian vereker Subject: NACA4 Incidentally the linn (K20?) cable was an illegal copy by BICC of our NACA4, BICC thought that it was their design and therefore started supplying both grey and black copies to other manufacturers including Linn - due to a change of staff/factory I believe. When this was pointed out to BICC, they settled out of court. We then spent the money on designing a new and better cable with another supplier under a secrecy agreement, and this is the NACA5. julian
